PASOK lashes out at government over data protection agency appointment decision

Opposition PASOK accused the government on Wednesday of seeking to influence a decision by the data protection agency ADAE on whether to fine the National Intelligence Service (EYP) 100,000 euros for refusing to cooperate with its investigation into the wiretapping affair.

The government, said the head of PASOK, Nikos Androulakis, whose phone was among dozens infected with illegal spyware, “is dangerous for our institutions and for democracy.”

His reaction came after Parliament President Konstantinos Tassoulas called a meeting of the Conference of Presidents – the body responsible for appointments at the country’s independent authorities – for Thursday to decide on the replacement of two ADAE members whose terms have expired.

PASOK, as well as the main opposition, SYRIZA, have voiced concerns that the government has already secured the majority of 17 votes it needs at the Conference to install two new members at ADAE who will sway the decision on EYP in the government’s favor.

ADAE’s initial meeting on the issue on Wednesday was rescheduled for Friday due to problems from the bad weather.
