Dendias visits Agios Efstratios on liberation anniversary

Defense Minister Nikos Dendias on Wednesday visited the island of Agios Efstratios to attend the events for the 111th anniversary of the island’s liberation from Ottoman Rule.

In his speech at the ceremony, Dendias highlighted that Agios Eleftherios is a landmark for the defense of Greece’s right to sovereignty.

“Greece maintains, like every other country on the planet, the self-evident right of defense against any threat. It retains the right to defend every part of its national space,” said Dendias.

Dendias added that Greece has a strategic position in Europe. “We are a pillar of security, stability and peace in a wider troubled region. The islands of our Archipelago mark not only our own national Greek borders but also Europe’s borders,” he said.

“Our country remains committed to the principles of Law, to the principles of International Law, to the principles of the Law of the Sea, to the principles of the United Nations Charter, which categorically prohibits not only the use of force but also the threat of the use of force,” he concluded.
