Single phone number linked to 11 people monitored by illegal spyware

Eleven people whose phones were infected with illegal spyware Predator received a message from the same phone number, according to a report by Mega channel on Wednesday, in new revelations pertaining to the ongoing judicial investigation into Greece’s spyware scandal.

The number appears to belong to a political figure who held an important government office until the summer of 2022, the report said.

In other cases of illegal surveillance uncovered by independent authorities during the investigation, found to be bulk message service companies and not the user of a specific phone number, while these companies had been instructed to display a specific phone number as the sender.

According to information that has not confirmed by official sources, the messages in question were a response to congratulatory messages that the specific person had received on the occasion of his name day, accompanied by an electronic greeting card linking to the spyware.

Commenting on the new revelations, PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis, himself a victim of illegal (Predator) and official surveillance (by intelligence service EYP), told lawmakers Parliament “some of the victims may be among you.”

“This happened in January 2021. The calendar leads us to [the name days of] Thanasis, Antonis, Fotis or Grigoris. Who could be the political person who could be behind these messages?” he asked.
