Mitsotakis will not move to top European post

The almost certain candidacy of Ursula von der Leyen for a second five-year term at the helm of the European Commission should put an end to persistent rumors that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis would move to a high EU post later this year.

Mitsotakis himself has persistently denied the rumors but they had refused to die. After all, it would be natural not to want to be seen as a lame duck prime minister, whatever his intentions.

Mitsotakis, along with his fellow conservative premiers of Finland, Petteri Orpo, and Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, has expressed support for von der Leyen’s candidacy. Withthe European People’s Party (EPP), the conservative political group, looking favored to re-electing its candidate, the other major position, president of the European Council, will go to a socialist. And Mitsotakis has anyway shown no interest in a position with limited powers.
