Fire breaks out in car junkyard in Athens

A fire broke out in an auto salvage yard park in the area of Kato Patisia, Athens, on Thursday morning, the fire department said. No injuries were reported.

The blaze spread to the surrounding outbuildings engulfing the area in thick black smoke.

Eye witnesses cited by state-run broadcaster ERT said they heard explosions prior to seeing the flames. It was not clear how or where the fire started.

Police temporarily cut traffic on Kourtidou street, at the junction with Nirvana and Stratigou Kallari streets.
