Ecumenical Patriarch on Imvros for anniversary celebrations

Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomaios, spiritual leader of the world’s 250 million Orthodox Christians, is visiting Imvros, the island off the mouth of the Dardenelles where he was born, to attend events marking the completion of his 50 years in priesthood.

Greek Foreign Minister Stavros Lambrinidis was also expected on the island on Friday to attend the ceremony which also commemorates the 20th anniversary of Vartholomaios’s enthronement as Ecumenical Patriarch.

Imvros came under Turkish control in 1923 after Greece and Turkey signed the Treaty of Lausanne.
