City brawls kill one, hurt many

A young member of the Roma community in Menidi, northern Athens, died on Saturday of gunshot injuries sustained during a violent brawl that took place on Friday night between two groups of youths.

Another five Roma men were seriously injured during the clashes, the cause of which remained unclear late Sunday.

According to police, two groups of youths became embroiled in a heated dispute, which degenerated into violence and culminated when some of those involved drew guns.

Another brawl, which broke out shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday in an apartment shared by Romanian nationals in the run-down Athens neighborhood of Aghios Panteleimonas, led to one injury when shots were fired.

According to police, the four Romanians living in the apartment were attacked by six intruders, one of whom fired a gun at a resident, injuring him in the arm and leg.
