Two arrested for ‘magic money’ scam
A 48-year-old Thessaloniki man was swindled out of 7,000 euros by two Nigerian suspects who convinced him that a special varnish could transform pieces of green paper into 100-euro notes, police in the northern port city said on Saturday.
After being tipped off by the 48-year-old, police sent him to meet the Nigerians in the city center with 20,000 euros — the additional fee requested for the varnish and other equipment.
The pair were arrested in the act of accepting the pre-marked bills.
Police said they found in the suspects? possession two syringes of liquid and several pieces of green paper in the shape of 100-euro notes.
Similar scams have been uncovered in Crete and other parts of the country over the past year.
