UK paper includes Papandreou among 2011 heroes

Former Prime Minister George Papandreou is among the Heroes of 2011, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The British broadsheet newspaper chose the PASOK leader among the heroic figures for the year that is about to end, suggesting that he fell victim of the financial crisis and was forced to resign from the premiership in November, but did leave his mark in favor of democracy.

?The Greek Prime Minister lost his job over the debt crisis but not before he had struck a blow for democracy. Faced with mounting pressure to accept what many saw as draconian austerity measures he said, ?OK, but only if it goes to a referendum?. The referendum never took place after the EU imposed a technocrat government on Greece, but the statement remains,? the UK paper wrote.

It adds that the year had more villains than heroes across the world.
