Tax evasion crackdown continues; 185 arrests in 2012
A total of 185 Greeks with major debts to the state have been arrested since the beginning of the year, owing nearly 700 million euros combined, Deputy Citizens? Protection Minister Manolis Othonas said on Tuesday.
Of the debtors, 70 were detained in Attica with a collective unpaid tax bill to the state of 533 million euros, Othonas said in a document submitted to Parliament.
Police have stepped up efforts to crack down on tax evasion, a major scourge depriving Greece of billions of euros in revenue.
