Only short-term inmates to qualify for early release

Only inmates who have been sentenced to less than five years in jail can take advantage of a new law that allows some prisoners to be released early to ease overcrowding in Greek prisons, according to a ruling on Wednesday by Supreme Court deputy prosecutor Athanasios Kannelopoulos.

Inmates will only be released once they have served a fifth of their sentence.
