Parcel bomb attack thought to be a settling of accounts

A 40-year-old businessman was in the hospital with serious injuries on Friday after opening a booby-trapped package which was delivered to his home in the affluent coastal suburb of Voula.

According to police, the entrepreneur accepted the package from a man wearing a uniform resembling that of a courier firm on Friday morning and opened it alone in his home. The packaging had been attached to the pin of a hand grenade that was pulled out as the businessman opened it, prompting the explosion, according to police who were called to the scene by neighbors.

Doctors said the 40-year-old ?had sustained wounds from shards of metal in his stomach and a fracture in his right leg.? The injuries were said to be serious but not life-threatening.

Police said they believe the attack on the businessman, who owns a hotel on the southern Aegean island of Crete, was an attempt to settle personal differences.
