German child killed in crash; Israeli climber dies in fall

A three-year old German girl was killed in a hit-and-run accident on the old national highway between Rethymno and Iraklio on Crete early on Sunday, according to the state-run Athens-Macedonia News Agency.

The child was walking along the side of the road with her mother when a car careened into them. Ambulances were quick arriving at the scene of the tragic accident, but the child had already succumbed to her injuries.

Her mother was being treated for shock at a local hospital, as police launched a widespread manhunt for the driver of the vehicle, who sped off after the accident.

Meanwhile, an Israeli climber is reported to have died on Sunday after falling into a ravine on Mount Olympus in northern Greece.

According to witnesses who were with the unidentified Israeli national, he slipped off a path during a walking tour of the Epinneas Gorge, tumbling down the ravine onto rocks.

Rescue workers called to the scene found him shortly after, but were unable to resuscitate him.
