Minister looking at ways of getting more officers on beat

Civil servants will be brought in from other departments to cover some 5,000 police desk jobs currently staffed by officers, who will be free to resume patrols and other policing duties, Citizens? Protection Minister Nikos Dendias told reporters Thursday.

He said he would also re-examine the deployment of 3,000 officers for the protection of VIPs. The minister added that he would be looking at the force?s spending patterns as well.

Dendias suggested there was room to make savings as the police force spends 19 million euros a year on renting buildings and 36 million on fuel. It also spends 13 million euros a year on servicing its fleet of 13,768 vehicles.
