Fence, gates for Pedion tou Areos park

The Attica Regional Authority is planning to erect eight gates at the Pedion tou Areos park in central Athens that will be locked at night in a bid to tackle rising crime in the area.

A local official told Kathimerini that apart from being a threat to public safety, the offenses in the park were also leading to costs racking up for the authority.

The official cited, for instance, the theft of cables and drain covers as examples of crimes that were draining Attica?s coffers. Drug dealing and male prostitution also take place in the park, where extremists have recently targeted immigrants.

Attica Governor Yiannis Sgouros recently signed a 1-million-euro contract for the installation of a fence around the park and he is looking for bids from entrepreneurs to operate a cafe and canteen within the grounds.
