Academics warn of Golden Dawn’s spreading influence in open letter
Three hundred Greek academics signed an open letter on Friday calling for society to unite against racism, as they cited the case of a nursery school teacher on the island of Lefkada who was targeted by the far-right Golden Dawn party for allowing some of her pupils to draw Albanian flags to be used in a display on October 28, a national holiday.
“Unprovoked racism and overzealous fascism are threatening to make their way into the education system.”
The academics criticized authorities for temporarily suspending the teacher so the matter could be investigated.
“Above all, we are concerned that Golden Dawn is trying to force its way into the education system,” they said.
“There must be zero tolerance of this.”
