Papandreou defends record in new document
In a 52-page text circulated by George Papandreou, the former prime minister and PASOK chief on Friday sought to fend off some of the most common accusations leveled against his administration.
Published under the title “We Debunk 15 Myths,” the document rejects allegations that the Papandreou administration inflated deficit figures in 2009, while invoking the limited room for maneuver during negotiations for Greece’s first bailout and spelling out several initiatives to crack down on tax evasion.
Former conservative PM Costas Karamanlis comes under fire for disguising the true macroeconomic figures, while current coalition chief Antonis Samaras is criticized for failing to support Papandreou as opposition leader.
