MPs vote to allow Golden Dawn deputy to face trial
Parliament voted on Wednesday to lift the parliamentary immunity of ultra-right Golden Dawn deputy and party spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris (photo) so he can face trial for assaulting two female lawmakers during a live television show in June last year.
A total of 205 deputies from the 300-seat House voted to lift the 32-year-old’s immunity with three voting “no” and one voting “present.”
Of the three conservative New Democracy MPs who voted against the motion, two – Yiannis Ioannidis, deputy minister for sports, and Yiannis Karabelas – said they did so by mistake while a third, Michalis Kefaloyiannis, secretary of the party’s political committee, said he wanted to give Kasidiaris a chance to apologize.
