Three arrested for metal theft in Xylokastro

Three men were arrested in Xylokastro in the northern Peloponnese Tuesday after removing 44 sections of rail track and 500 screws, police said.

The three men, two Poles and an Iraqi, were caught loading the material onto a truck in the Mavro Lithari area. The tracks and screws were returned to the Hellenic Railways Organization.

Police said that another two suspects eluded arrest and are being sought.

There has been an increase in incidents of railway track theft over the past few years, as gangs look to profit from selling their loot as scrap.
