Golden Dawn MP’s immunity lifted over alleged assault on Athens Mayor
Golden Dawn MP Giorgos Germenis is to face prosecution over his alleged attempt to assault Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis in May after a majority of Greek deputies voted late on Tuesday to lift his parliamentary immunity.
A total of 208 deputies voted for Germenis’ immunity to be lifted and two against, with one blank vote and the rest abstaining from the vote.
The far-right deputy allegedly tried to punch Kaminis inside a City of Athens social grocery after police stopped Golden Dawn from holding a food handout for native Greeks only in central Syntagma Square.
A video of the incident showed Germenis being restrained by the mayor’s security guards following the attempted punch against Kaminis, which is said to have landed on a 12-year-old girl.
