Prosecutor seeks charges for ex-SDOE chiefs

Financial prosecutor Panayiotis Athanasiou on Monday recommended that two former heads of the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE), Yiannis Diotis and Yiannis Kapeleris, be charged with breach of trust in connection with the so-called “Lagarde list” of possible tax cheats.

He also called for charges to be dropped against Diotis’s former aide Galateia Mane.

The case file was forwarded to an investigating magistrate.

Meanwhile, Parliament was debating late Monday on whether former Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou should face criminal prosecution for tampering with the list that contained the names of more than 2,000 Greeks with accounts at a Geneva branch of HSBC – including four of his relatives.

Earlier this month a cross-party parliamentary committee called for Papaconstantinou, who served as finance minister between 2009 and mid-2011, to stand trial for breach of trust, doctoring an official document and dereliction of duty.

The former socialist minister, who denies the allegations, was expected to address the 300-member House later Monday ahead of a secret ballot set for midnight.

Authorities are continuing an investigation into the assets of Papaconstantinou’s relatives.
