Metro extension to cut carbon emissions

Four new metro stations are due to open in the capital’s southeastern suburbs at noon on Friday, expected to lead to 13,000 fewer cars on Athenian roads and a 89-ton drop in carbon emissions each day, according to experts.

The four new Line 2 stations – Ilioupoli, Alimos, Argyroupoli and Elliniko – will serve an estimated 83,000 passengers daily.

As all four are located on busy Vouliagmenis Avenue, it is expected that traffic on the arterial road will ease up.

“The metro in these neighborhoods will serve working people and the working class,” said Transport Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis, who visited the stations on Thursday.

The journey from Elliniko, where Line 2 will end, to the city center will take 14 minutes.
