Financial crimes squad enlists help of coast guard to inspect islands
Greece has enlisted the coast guard in its attempt to tackle tax evasion around-the-clock on islands during the busy summer season.
The Finance Ministry said on Friday that an agreement had been reached between the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) and the coast guard for officers to help inspectors get to islands to check if local businesses are issuing receipts to customers and following other tax regulations. The coast guard said it would provide 24-hour access to the islands.
The government has pledged to step up checks on islands this summer, with inspections so far revealing a large proportion of businesses still committing tax offenses.
