Checks reveal high proportion of disability fraud in western Greece
A high percentage of residents in the region of Aitoloakarnania, western Greece, who have been claiming disability for being deaf or blind have been doing so illegally, the Labor Ministry revealed.
It said that during checks on disability payments, 27.38 percent of people claiming to be blind were found not to be visually impaired.
Of those claiming to have hearing problems, 20.45 percent were found not to be deaf.
Labor Minister Yiannis Vroutsis said that disability payments had been stopped to those concerned.
About half of those claiming payments did not appear for tests and will be given another chance to come forward in September.
