Thessaloniki appeals court upholds conviction of doctor who demanded ‘fakelaki’

A Thessaloniki appeals court on Wednesday upheld a two-year suspended prison sentence passed down on a 50-year-old doctor from Kilkis who allegedly demanded a 400-euro under-the-table payment, or “fakelaki,” to arrange the transfer to a rehabilitation clinic of an 85-year-old patient.

The 50-year-old, who heads an orthopedic surgery in Kilkis, allegedly accepted a bottle of whiskey from the patient’s 33-year-old son after operating on her leg in February but then asked for 400 euros to transfer the patient to a clinic.
