Environmental groups slam lake water-skiing competition

Animal lovers have slammed the government and local authorities for allowing an international water-skiing competition to take place on Pamvotida Lake in Ioannina, northwestern Greece, saying it put rare birds at risk.

The Greek Ornithological Society said that the Europe and Africa Water Ski Championship earlier this month was only hosted because environmental laws were ignored.

Earlier this year, the group lodged a complaint with the Environmental Advocacy Service, after repeatedly calling for a halt to illegal earthworks, excavation and reed cutting to make way for water-skiing facilities in the Amfithea wetlands area.

The lake’s reed beds provide a breeding ground for the Ferruginous Duck, among other birds.
