Acclaimed artists Giorgos Varlamos dies at 91

The funeral of Giorgis Varlamos, a respected painter best known for his etchings, who died at the age of 91 on Friday, is set to take place at Athens’s First Cemetery on Monday.

Born on the Cycladic island of Paros in 1922, Varlamos studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts before earning a scholarship to further his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Among the themes explored in Varlamos’s etchings were Greece’s struggle against the Nazi occupation, the Vietnam War and world peace.

In his paintings, the artist focused on brightly colored landscapes and Greek flora. Over the years Varlamos designed covers for a large number of books, including poetry collections.
