Worker pelted with stones by scavengers at landfill near Athens

An employee at the capital’s main landfill at Fyli, northwestern Attica, was hospitalized on Wednesday after being pelted with stones by local Roma and immigrants who have been entering the grounds in recent months to scavenge for valuables.

The employee had been driving a truck distributing a corrosive substance to reduce the volume of the garbage on the site when he was attacked by a group of scavengers, according to other site workers who witnessed the incident.

The extent of the driver’s injuries was unclear.

Authorities in recent months have warned of an increasingly dangerous situation as a growing number of undocumented immigrants and Roma have been trespassing on the site to search for items of value.
