Giorgos Kaminis to run for Athens mayor again next year

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis announced on Wednesday that he intends to run for his position again in next year’s elections.

Kaminis, whose mayorship has largely been dominated by an effort to balance the municipality’s books while central government is being slashed, highlighted welfare and immigration as two of the key issues for Athens.

“After recent events and the public show of raw violence by those who hate democracy and freedom, our policy forms common ground for democratic citizens and all political forces that believe in democracy and are prepared to fight for it,” said Kaminis, the former Ombudsman.

The mayor, who was elected as an independent, albeit backed by PASOK, in 2010 insisted that he had no intention of pursuing any other kind of career.

“I am not just passing through,” he said. “The municipality was and will remain the heaviest responsibility I have taken on in my life.”
