Lawyer quits in protest at decision on Stamati’s appeal
Celebrity lawyer Alexis Kougias resigned in protest on Tuesday from defending the wife of ex-Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulpos, Viki Stamati, after judges decided to hear an appeal against her incarceration next year.
Kougias said the decision not to hear the case now was taken because the minutes of the trial during which Stamati was convicted have not yet been recorded properly.
The lawyer said he doubted whether this will have changed by February 3, until when Stamati’s hearing has been delayed, because the court’s secretary also works for the special magistrates investigating Golden Dawn.
Stamati is serving a 12-year sentence in connection to her husband’s laundering of money taken in kickbacks for defense contracts.
