Thessaloniki car dealer facing jail takes his life

A 56-year-old car dealer, who had been facing a total of eight years in prison for several convictions of fraud, forgery and embezzlement, took his own life in his apartment in Thessaloniki on Monday after police officers arrived at the building to arrest him.

The businessman refused to open the door to officers and threatened to kill himself, prompting officers to spread out an inflatable landing pad to break his fall in the event that he jumped.

A short while later, police heard a gunshot and broke into the apartment, where they found the 56-year-old dead.

The businessman had been convicted for a series of offenses including fraud, forgery and embezzlement, sources said.
