Showers and snow forecast for New Year’s Day

Many parts of Greece will see in the new year with heavy downpours that will sweep into the country in the early hours of Wednesday from the southwest.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) said on Tuesday that showers and sporadic thunderstorms are forecast for the Ionian islands and the Peloponnese on New Year’s Day and will spread to the Cyclades, Crete and the Dodecanese.

The mountains of the Peloponnese will see snow that will be heavy in parts, at altitudes above 1,100 meters.

In Athens, the HNMS said in expects sporadic showers on Wednesday and temperatures ranging from 4-11 degrees Celsius, and in Thessaloniki, there will be a few light showers over the course of the day and temperatures will range from 4-9 degrees Celsius.
