Four policemen among suspects in migrant smuggling ring
Four police officers are among the 22 suspected members of a major migrant smuggling racket arrested this week, a police spokesman said on Friday.
The officers were based in the northern region of Evros with the remainder operating in Evros, Athens and Thessaloniki, the spokesman, Christos Parthenis, said.
He said the suspects face charges of membership of a criminal organization, facilitating illegal entry into the country, money laundering and fraud. The racket is alleged to have made significant profits by smuggling “a large number” of Georgian immigrants into the country over the past six years via Greece’s land and sea border with Turkey.
