Demolition work begins at illegal Athens cemetery

Workers began dismantling a cemetery in the southern Athens suburb of Glyfada on Friday that was built illegally by the local municipality.

The cemetery was established on the slopes of Mount Hymettus in 2011 but only a few burials took place before authorities stepped in.

“The Regional Administration of Attica has begun a program to demolish illegal structures following final court decisions,” said the body’s general secretary, Manolis Angelakas.

“We will continue doing our work and sending out a clear message: Nobody can be above the law, which we are determined to apply without any exception.”
