Prosecutor orders probe into pitch invasion during soccer game

The head of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Isidoros Dogiakos, on Thursday ordered a preliminary investigation into events at the recent Panathinaikos vs Olympiakos soccer derby. The game’s kickoff was delayed after several Panthinaikos fans invaded the pitch.

The home side accused Olympiakos officials of inciting the supporters by walking toward them before the game and making gestures.

The investigation was prompted by a complaint lodged by Panathinaikos chairman Yiannis Alafouzos on Thursday.

On Wednesday night, there was another pitch invasion by AEK fans at the Olympic Stadium, where their side was taking on Olympiakos in the Greek Cup quarterfinal.

Olympiakos scored a goal in the 89th minute of the game that would have sent the Reds through to the semifinal.

The pitch invasion led to the game being abandoned amid complaints from AEK that Olympiakos players and officials made gestures toward home supporters.
