Pyrgos trash warning sparks residents’ protest
The regional authority inspector responsible for health and sanitation in the western Peloponnesian town of Pyrgos on Monday warned of the hazards of mounting piles of trash that have accumulated on the city’s streets over the past few weeks.
His warning prompted an angry response from residents, who held a rally later in the day demanding a solution to the waste disposal problem which began with the closure of the local landfill.
Authorities believe there are currently over 7,000 tons of trash festering on the streets of Pyrgos.
