Migrant housing sought in Athens

As some 300 more undocumented migrants landed on Greek shores in less than 24 hours, Alternate Minister for Immigration Policy Tasia Christodoulopoulou on Friday met with Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis in a bid to find shelter for the increasing inflows.

Kaminis said the municipality has located 1,800 unused buildings and several hotels in the city center, urging the minister to liaise with other ministries to ascertain whether any of these can be used for this purpose.

Christodoulopoulou for her part reiterated calls for other municipalities to contribute to the accommodation effort.

Meanwhile, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention is next week due to inspect migrant reception centers on the islands of Rhodes, Tilos and Kos.
