German Navy vessels arrive at Crete on way to assist in migrant rescues
Two Germany Navy vessels reached Crete on Monday, on a mission to assist in migrant rescue operations in the Mediterranean, the German Defense Ministry announced.
Task force supply ship Berlin and frigate Hessen are expected to reach their final destination off Libya later in the week.
According to a German Defense Ministry official, the vessels could be used for patrols by the European Union’s border management agency Frontex.
Over 1,200 migrants died while trying to reach European shores in April, prompting EU leaders to hold an emergency summit on April 23.
At the meeting EU leaders decided to triple the budget of Triton, an operation handled by Frontex.
