Citizenship bill to attract migrants to Greece, says New Democracy

New Democracy on Friday slammed a new citizenship bill put up for public consultation as constituting an “open invitation” to undocumented migrants.

All they would have to do, said spokesman Costas Karagounis, “is enroll their child in first grade and automatically receive a residence permit for themselves and their family.”

PASOK, meanwhile, called for ratification as fast as possible, adding that the bill is almost identical to one it drafted while in the previous government.

The new law would allow children born to migrants to get citizenship as long as they attend Greek primary school and at least one of their parents has lived in the country legally for five years prior to their birth.
