Firefighters put out large fire at Rendi Roma camp

A large fire that broke out at a Roma settlement in the area of Rendi, southwestern Athens, on Thursday caused serious damage but no injuries before it was contained by firefighters.

A large unit comprising 29 firefighters manning nine fire engines was dispatched to the scene of the blaze, which sent large clouds of smoke billowing over much of the area, and nearby Piraeus, on a hot and muggy day, making the atmosphere oppressive.

The blaze broke out in a warehouse at the Roma settlement where residents reported hearing loud explosions, fueling speculation of a boiler blast.
