Three downtown metro stations to close for US Embassy rally
The Megaro Moussikis, Evangelismos and Syntagma metro stations will be closed as of 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday as part of security measures for a protest rally to the US Embassy later in the day.
The rally is held to commemorate the victims of a student uprising against the military dictatorship on November 17, 1973.
The annual event is often marked by isolated incidents of violence and authorities have taken additional security measures this year over fears that anti-austerity sentiment may stoke unrest.
Major thoroughfares, including Vassilissis Sofias Avenue, will also be closed until the end of the protest. This will affect service on buses and trolley buses to central Athens.
