Ministry proposes special steps for children with flu

Pupils with flu symptoms should be isolated from their classmates until their parents come to pick them up, the Education Ministry has advised schools as authorities try to prevent the virus from spreading.

The Hellenic Center of Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) says that this year’s H1N1 strain of flu can cause complications in young people, including those with no other health issues.

Sixteen children out of a total 252 flu sufferers have received treatment in intensive care units this year. One of those, a 4-year-old, died despite not suffering any other health problems. The average age of those requiring hospitalization after contracting flu is 53.
