Fire breaks out in forest on Mount Parnon in Peloponnese

Firefighters from across the southern Greek region of the Peloponnese on Sunday were trying to put out a large blaze in a forested area of Mount Parnon.
The blaze started at around 2 p.m. and was quickly stoked by strong winds blowing in this part of the southeast Peloponnese. Authorities said that it does not appear as yet to be a threat to residential areas like Aghios Ioannis and Meligou, or to a nearby monastery, Panaghia Malevi.
Eight water-dumping craft have been dispatched from regional airports to help ground crews control the blaze, which is burning through rich forestland that is an important natural habitat.
