Fears grow for Lesvos woman

The search, for the owner of a betting shop on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos who has been missing since Sunday, was stepped up yesterday as fears for her safety grew after her car was found abandoned. Police helicopters, soldiers, coast guard and volunteer rescue teams were all involved in the search across the island for Anastassia Hadzidiakou, 31, who disappeared on Sunday night when she went to collect a debt from one of her customers. An airplane from the local flying club was also involved in the search. Officers are concerned that the 31-year-old was the victim of a criminal act as her car was found hidden at the side of a country road yesterday. Officers said Hadzidiakou met 24-year-old Haralambos Christofias, in the village of Vafeio to collect 14,000 euros but did not return home.
