Singer Eleni Tsaligopoulou performs on stage as part of the New Year’s Eve festivities organized by the City of Athens in central Kotzias Square. Thousands of people gathered on a mild evening from about 10 p.m. to greet 2006 at one of the city’s largest squares and watch an impressive fireworks display. Similar events were held around the capital and in other cities across the country.
