Detainees escape
Police in Igoumenitsa seek two migrant smugglers Police and Port Authority officials in the northwestern port of Igoumenitsa yesterday were searching for two suspected migrant smugglers who escaped from a port authority detention center on Sunday night. The men, both foreign nationals whose ethnic origin was not revealed, had been detained earlier in the week on charges of trying to smuggle illegal immigrants onto ferries bound for Italy. The circumstances of their escape were unclear. Priest held Youth claims harassment Police in Kozani yesterday were questioning a priest from a village near the northern city who is alleged to have sexually molested a 17-year-old youth in the village church. According to the youth’s testimony, the priest asked him to follow him to the church crypt on Good Friday, during the preparations of the Easter bier procession. There the priest, whose age and name were not revealed, is alleged to have sexually harassed the youth. Fatal fall A Pakistani man fell to his death from the second story of a building site in Nea Ionia, northern Athens, yesterday. Police, who did not name the man, said that the incident occurred shortly before noon and that the Pakistani national was taken to the hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. Officers were investigating the circumstances surrounding his fall and refused to speculate whether it was an accident or suicide. Hole in the wall Robbers broke into a branch of the National Bank in the village of Velo in Corinthia, in the Peloponnese, and stole around 300,000 euros from the safe, employees discovered yesterday. Police said that the robbers forced open a window at the rear of the building, disarmed the alarm and then used a blowtorch to open a hole in the safe door. It was not clear when the robbers might have broken into the building. Supermarket raid Armed robbers stole 50,000 euros from a supermarket in Mani, Messenia, on Good Friday. Police said the two men walked into the office of the 56-year-old owner and forced him to hand over the cash. Thousands of euros’ worth of jewelry was stolen from a workshop in the eastern Athens suburb of Aegaleo over the Easter weekend, police said yesterday. The robbery was discovered on Sunday. Convict overdose A 51-year-old inmate at the Larissa jail in central Greece died of a drug overdose at his father’s home near the Cretan port of Iraklion while on furlough on Saturday. Police said they found a used syringe and a range of tranquilizers at the house. Bad sport Police at Athens International Airport on Friday detained a 27-year-old basketball player alleged to have approached strangers in Internet chatrooms under the pretext of seeking a date before using the threat of violence to rob them when they met. It was unclear whether the player was at the airport to meet another prospective victim or for a scheduled trip.
