An important visit

US President Barack Obama’s visit to the Athens this week is very important. The American leader has given Greece his support in some extremely difficult times for the country and has acted as a bulwark against forces that wanted to see Greece out of the eurozone.

In contrast to many European leaders who did not weigh the geopolitical consequences of a Grexit, the outgoing American president made sure to stress Greece’s strategic importance.

Obama’s visit to Athens is significant firstly because American foreign policy tends to have a sense of continuity and also because it appears that the outgoing US president will continue to play an important part in American and international developments.
