Why should EU prove it’s not Christian club?
I would like to respond to the statement by Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul during his interview with Kathimerini English Edition (December 19): «The EU has proved to the Muslim world that it is not a Christian club.» First, as a Christian, I find it very offensive when somebody says that EU has to prove that it is not a Christian club. Although Turkey has yet to increase its tolerance of other religions, I do not see anybody saying that Turkey has to show that it is not a Muslim country. Second, instead of accepting Turkey – which is not and will never be a European country – the EU should give Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina (countries where the Muslim population is a majority) full-membership status. Finally, it is amazing how tolerant the world community is with some countries. Turkey has yet to admit to the Armenian genocide and to leave Cyprus, a European country that was invaded. Instead of demanding Turkish troops leave Cyprus, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan comes up with a plan so ridiculous that it was rejected by the great majority of Greek-Cypriot citizens.
