Greece in pre-Olympic volleyball tournament
Greece’s national volleyball team opens its difficult campaign to take part in next summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing with a tough clash against the Netherlands in Catania, Italy tonight. The two teams are in the same subgroup as Romania, Greece’s next opponent tomorrow. If Greece ends first or second in the subgroup it will face one of Italy, Croatia or Montenegro for a place in Sunday’s final that will determine which team will play in the Olympic qualification tournament in Turkey in January. With Italy being the hot favorites to qualify, Greece will try to do its best and gain experience, according to coach Alekos Leonis. Greece had beaten the Netherlands in September in the European Championship in Russia.
