Top honors for Iakovakis and Devetzi

Periklis Iakovakis, winner of the European title in the men’s 400-meter hurdles in Gothenburg last year, and triple-jump athlete Chrysopigi Devetzi, a bronze medalist in the women’s triple jump at the Worlds in Osaka last summer, were named the country’s best male and female track-and-field athletes by the locally based Friends of Athletics Society (SFKA) at a ceremony in Athens yesterday. Cypriot high-jumper Kyriakos Ioannou, his country’s first ever medal winner at the World Championships, was also honored at yesterday’s ceremony for last summer’s bronze-medal leap and national record in Osaka. Other winners included 110-meter hurdler Costas Douvalidis and high-jumper Tonia Stergiou, who were named best junior athletes.
